Introduction to Faculty of Foreign Language Teacher Education (FLTE)

1. General introduction

The Faculty of Foreign Language Teacher Education (FLTE), University of Foreign Language Studies-The University of Danang is a pioneer in training foreign language teachers and professionals for the Central Vietnam and the Western Highlands, and the whole country at large.

The Faculty was officially established in December 2016 on the basis of being partitioned from the Faculty of English and merging all the divisions of teacher training from the Faculty of French and the Faculty of Chinese. However, the foreign language teacher training, or rather, the training of English and French teachers dated back from 1985 when Danang Teachers’ Training College was established under the initiative of Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training. However, upon the establishment of the regional University of Danang in 1994, the College was merged with the College of Education to become the University of Education under the overarching leadership of the University of Danang. In 2002, all the faculties of foreign languages were separated from University of Education to become the existing University of Foreign Language Studies. The English Teacher Training Program has been with the Faculty of English since its infancy, and it will have reached its 35th birthday by 2020.

With the re-structuring of UFLS-UD, FLTE has officially come to shape and housed all the teacher training programs in foreign languages. Since its establishment in December 2016, the Faculty has successfully developed its master’s program in English Language Teaching, and has so far recruited two cohorts in the past two years. The Faculty is now staffed with around 25 members with 23 lecturers and 02 secretarial and registrar staff, including one associate professor, seven doctoral degree holders, and 24 master’s degree holders professionally trained overseas (UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, France, Taiwan, China, etc.) and four pursuing doctoral programs overseas, the Faculty of Foreign Language Teacher Education of UFLS-UD has been assuming an increasing important role in the training of human resources in foreign language in response to demands for training, research, and study of foreign languages in the locality and in the region.
